Специальная инструкция по преобразованию символов контурного шрифта в растровый формат, применяемая при выводе их на экран дисплея или устройство печати. При преобразовании может возникнуть ситуация, когда из-за низкого разрешения устройства вывода или при маленьких величинах кегля контурная кривая будет лишь частично проходить через точку растра. Поэтому, если данный пиксель будет отображаться полностью, то результирующая толщина данного элемента символа будет больше, чем в оригинальном контурном символе, и наоборот, если данный пиксель не будет отображаться, то линия будет тоньше. Для решения этой проблемы и используется операция хинтования, которая позволяет систематизированно искривлять элементы символов в зависимости от их размеров и разрешения устройств вывода. При использовании устройств с высокой разрешающей способностью (более 1000 точек на дюйм) необходимость в хинтовании отпадает.
